Healthy hiking snacks to pack for your next trek

As the rainy season is finally ending, the skies are starting to clear, and the sun is rearing its familiar friendly head, there has never been a better time to get back into the great outdoors and set out on your next trek.

That said, hiking takes a lot of energy, so you’ll need to bring the proper fuel.

It just so happens, you’re in luck! We’ve compiled a list of handy healthy hiking snacks to help you re-energize and make the most of your climb time.

Dry or fresh fruit

Containing natural sugars and, in fresh form, a convenient dose of hydration, fruit is an ideal healthy sweet treat!

That said, if you don’t want to run the risk of juices leaking in your pack and getting all your stuff icky and sticky, dried fruit provides a perfect energy-dense option. For example, dried apricots, raisins, craisins or banana chips.

Granola

Curb your munchy tummy with something crunchy!

Typically comprising rolled oats, nuts, honey or another sweetener, whether loose or in bar form, granola is one of the most popular hiking snacks, and it's not hard to understand why.

One particular advantage is its versatility. You can truly make it your own by adding whatever you fancy.

Trail mix

Continuing on the crunchy train, you can't make a list of hiking snacks without mentioning the most sacred contender - trail mix!

After all, 'trail' is right there in the name.

A mixture of dried fruits, nuts, and sometimes a little bit of candy - we know this list is for 'healthy' snacks, but hey! We're all human - trail mix is a tried and true favourite of trekkers because it provides a welcome boost of energy while also serving as a source of protein.

Jerky

Speaking of protein, jerky is another favourite among hikers, thanks to its protein-rich nature and dose of healthy fats.

However, you need to be careful with it. Since it's essentially dried meat, jerky is made using the addition of salt to prevent bacteria growth before the meat has finished the dehydrating process.

In other words, watch your intake because the extra sodium could cause you to drain your water supply fast.

Dark chocolate

That’s right, fellow chocoholics! You can indulge your inner chocolate lover while still being active.

Dark chocolate is an excellent source of antioxidants and healthy fats. It is also naturally rich in electrolytes, including potassium, magnesium, calcium, and a rich source of fibre.

Who knew!
